Part of my Bug Out Procedure includes survival. You read that, and you think "Well...I should hope so!" What I mean here is that I have an actual survival bag, a Bug Out Bag if you will, in my closet that I put in my car anytime I go over 50 miles from home. In this bag I keep a variety of tools and gadgets, to include knives, about 2 weeks worth of MRE foods to eat, Heater Packs, matches, lighters, a distress signal, an orange vest, flagging tape, some Fat Lighter wood (The inside of a thick Carolina Pine Tree. I have a piece about an inch and a half thick and 8-9 inches long. Ive been using shavings from it to start fires since my wee cub scout and Boy Scout/Eagle Scout days from years and years ago.)
All of these things are just as essential to survival as a decked out AR-15 SOPMOD with all the gizmos and attachable doodads of the Battle Rifle spectra. Part of the plan is to be prepared, and to be ready to provide for yourself IMMEDIATELY. The plan has to be more than just self defense, but self sustainability. When the Shit Hits The Fan, it can come in many ways. Lots of people think of total national anarchy, or a zombie apocalypse. SHTF happens quite often actually, and its important to recognize how relevant it is and how close to hope it can occur. When disaster strikes in the form of Hurricanes and Flooding along our coasts, or with the Wildfires in Texas, Colorado, and the Midwest, or the dangers of violent immigrants in California, Arizona, and South Texas, there is the real possibility that one day, you may be faced with a situation where you have to defend your life, your property, and your family.
It is important to have a plan. Actually, one could venture to say a number of plans, or options, would be ideal, to accompany the many things that go wrong in the science of planning for the unknown, as well as the versatility of being able to adapt, and the fact that SHTF means that literally, very few things are going right, and you need to be one of the few things that does.
Homesteading or grouping as a family is part of our plan. We even have an agreement with some neighbors, as well as with another fellow who has land, who has mentioned underground tunnels on his property. In the event that a situation occurs where you need to survive, whether it be a broken down vehicle in BFE and you have no one to turn to, or whether your small town has had a disaster strike, and hungry people are trying to gain entry to your home for food, will you survive?
